Mental Health Programs for Veterans in Southern California

At Montare Behavioral Health we offer effective mental health programs for veterans. When you’re ready to start living the healthier life you deserve, our team of mental health professionals are here for you.

Service. Sacrifice. Resilience.

As a veteran, you understand these words better than most people who have never worn their nation’s uniform.

You also know what it means to make this solemn promise to those who served alongside you: No one gets left behind.

At Montare Behavioral Health, we believe that you deserve the same level of commitment and support that you embodied throughout your time in the military.

If you have been struggling with PTSD, depression, or another mental health concern, there may have been times that you’ve felt you were all alone. Perhaps even worse, you may have believed that no one could possibly understand what you were going through, or help you find your way out of the darkness. However, the experienced team at Montare Behavioral Health is dedicated towards providing the best mental health treatment available for our veterans. The first step towards taking control of your mental health is by contacting our team right now.

Veterans and Mental Health

The unique demands of military service can put veterans at increased risk for certain mental health concerns. For example, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is more common among military members than it is among the civilian population. In addition to PTSD and other effects of trauma, many veterans also struggle with depression and anxiety.

PTSD

The National Center for PTSD, which is part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), has reported that the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder among veterans varies according to when and where they served:

  • Experts estimate that 11%-20% of those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan will have symptoms of PTSD.
  • Among Gulf War veterans, the past-year prevalence of PTSD is about 12%.
  • The lifetime rate of PTSD among Vietnam veterans is about 30%.

Depression

Depression among military veterans remains a significant concern. One study of military medical facilities found that about 11.4% of all service members have symptoms of depression. Among those who had been deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq, the depression rate increased to about 15%.

Other sources suggest that depression may be much more common among military members than this study indicates. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has reported that the depression rate among military members and veterans may be as much as five times higher than among the general public.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a general term that can encompass several distinct disorders. One study of anxiety disorders among military members reported the following:

  • Researchers estimate that about 15.4% of active-duty personnel have an anxiety disorder.
  • From 2000-2012, diagnoses of anxiety disorders among military personnel increased by 327%.
  • Anxiety disorders were the eighth leading cause of hospitalizations and ambulatory visits to healthcare facilities by military personnel in 2017.

Mental Health Treatment Programs We Offer to Our Veterans

Mental health treatment for veterans can occur at multiple levels. Some people only need to participate in treatment at one level of care. However, others may be best served by spending time in multiple programs. At Montare Behavioral Health, our programming options include inpatient treatment and two types of outpatient care.

Inpatient

Inpatient treatment may be the ideal level of care for a person who is experiencing severe symptoms. It can also help those who can benefit from round-the-clock support. During a veteran’s inpatient program, they will live at one of our facilities in the Los Angeles area. This allows them to temporarily step away from the distractions and stressors of daily life. It also allows them to focus their full attention on their mental health.

Each veteran who receives inpatient treatment at Montare Behavioral Health follows a customized treatment plan that is based on a detailed assessment of their mental health needs and goals. In general, our inpatient program is a short-term experience that is designed to help veterans achieve the level of stabilization that will allow them to return home or step down to an outpatient program.

Outpatient

At Montare Behavioral Health, our mental health treatment for veterans includes two outpatient options. Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) features about eight hours of treatment per day, five days each week. Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) includes three hours of daily treatment, with the option to attend sessions up to five days a week.

While a veteran is in one of our outpatient programs, they only need to be at our facility when treatment is in session. During non-treatment hours, they can return home or spend their time as they see fit. This balance between structured clinical care and independent living can be a significant benefit for participants. This is especially true as they prepare to transition out of treatment.

Types of Therapy for Our Veterans

Each person’s care at Montare Behavioral Health is customized according to their needs, goals, and expectations. The services that are incorporated into a veteran’s mental health treatment plan may also be influenced by which program they are enrolled in.

The therapeutic component of a veteran’s treatment may include individual, group, and family sessions:

  • Individual therapy: Confidential, one-on-one conversations with an experienced professional can be ideal opportunities for veterans to discuss issues or concerns that they may be hesitant to address in a group setting.
  • Group therapy: Groups are supportive forums where veterans can gain valuable insights, practice effective communication and problem-solving skills, and share support with others who are working toward similar goals.
  • Family therapy: Family therapy sessions are safe spaces where family members can process how they have been impacted by their loved one’s mental health struggles and all participants can learn how to better support each other.

Depending on how a veteran has been affected by mental illness, their customized treatment plan may incorporate the following therapeutic modalities and treatment techniques:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
  • Neurofeedback
  • Somatic therapy
  • Holistic treatment

The more we know about your needs or the needs of your loved one, the better prepared we will be to describe the specific elements of care that may be most beneficial.
