About Mental Health Technician Jobs

Mental health technicians (which are also known as mental health techs, behavioral health technicians/techs, and psychiatric technicians/techs) perform a variety of essential support tasks, most of which involve direct interaction with patients and clients. 

The types of duties that may be performed by mental health technicians include:

  • Gathering intake information and completing admissions paperwork
  • Delivering medications to patients
  • Supervising patients 
  • Observing and recording patient behaviors
  • Leading recreational activity groups
  • Monitoring patients’ vital signs
  • Assisting patients with basic activities of daily living (ADLs)

The requirements for serving as a mental health technician can vary from job to job and state to state. The American Association of Psychiatric Technicians (AAPT) has established four levels of certification for professionals in this field. Here are the criteria for pursuing these certifications:

  • Level 1: Have a high school diploma or a GED and pass a certification exam
  • Level 2: Complete 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of college in any subject area and have at least one year of experience in the field of mental health disorders or developmental disabilities 
  • Level 3: Complete 60 semester hours or 80 quarter hours of college in any subject and have at least two years of experience in the field
  • Level 4: Have a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in a subject area related to mental health or developmental disabilities, and also have at least three years of experience in the field
